Types Of Rat Traps

April 12th, 2012

Rats are unanimously hated for the damage they cause and more and more rat traps have been introduced in the market to check their growing menace. Figures indicate that rats alone are responsible for an annual crop loss so great that will be sufficient for at least 200 million people. If rat infestation is indoors, it may prove even costlier. Rats chew away wires that can cause fire in the house. Besides the damage, rats are also responsible for carrying deadly diseases. Due to the above mentioned reasons, rat extermination at its onset is very important.

rat traps

Times are changing, and so are the rat traps. Today’s rat traps are not just rat traps, they are electronic machines. Rat Zapper and Victor have come out with very innovative rat traps that are considered much humane than the rest of the rat traps in the market. The electronic rat trap has infrared sensors all along its way up to the bait. When the rat smells the bait, it traverses the same path activating those sensors. When it reaches the bait, a high voltage electrical current is passed through the rat’s body, killing it instantly. This current originates from the four AA batteries to power this rat trap. The body of the rat falls below in a chamber made specifically for this purpose. This chamber can collect up to 10 rat bodies. A red light outside the electronic rat trap indicates that a rat has been caught. It comes for $50 to $200. This type of trap is for indoor use only.

The rat cage trap is very basic and its functioning is very simple. It lures the rat into the cage using bait. When the rat enters the cage and tries to pull the bait, the spring action triggers the gate to shut behind the rat trapping it. This trap is widely used in fields and farms because of its simple design and cost effectiveness. This trap doesn’t kill the rat but captures it so that it may be relocated. The snap trap and the glue trap are also very often used to kill rats. Rat poison works too but it has many disadvantages.  It is poisonous and may cause health problems if consumed accidently. It also destroys crops and other trees too if used outside.

Rat traps vary in design and utility, indoors or outdoors, and should be bought only after careful examination of the requirements.

This particular domesticated rat lived up to seven years and four months. Their average age is between 2-3 years. A rat weighs around 11 ounces. An adult rat is about 13-18 cm long. Rats are omnivores and eat almost everything but have a soft corner for high sugar food. They eat for around 15-20 times a day. They are the favorite meal of various predators namely Cats, Snakes, Dogs, Eagles and Coyotes. Their tail is thicker than the common mouse.

facts about rats

Rats have very poor vision. They only see shadow and movement. To compensate for this disability, rats are often seen shaking their head sideways to see an object clearly. They also are unable to see color. They have advanced hearing capabilities and can even hear ultrasonic frequencies, just like Cats and Dogs. They also have advance senses of taste and smell which helps them quickly locate their food.

Rats are very social. They like to live in clusters and with their relatives. A female rat is known to care for pups which are not its own. They have special bonding with each other and take care of injured or ill relatives. They like playing together and cuddling up while sleeping. The rat resembles humans in many aspects too. A male rat searches for food while a female rat searches for stuffs which can be used in making a nest.

Rats reproduce around 4-6 times a year. The average litter size is 8-12 pups. The gestation period of a female rat is about 20 days. A rat can start reproducing when it is 3 months old. It is even said that a single male and a female rat can have over a million descendants in less than 2 years. Keep this in mind when you see a rat in your house.

Domesticated rats are very good companions. The male rat stays still while you hold it but the female rat has an exploring nature. A male rat and a female rat can be put together in the same cage but care should be taken to remove their new-borns as they will multiply very rapidly. A new rat should be carefully introduced in the pack.

These facts about rats are very important to know if you are about to start rat extermination or have decided to bring a rat in your house as a pet.

Tips On Rat Extermination

March 19th, 2012

Before undergoing rat extermination, it is important to know what problems rats pose. Rats are slightly bigger than mice. They chew away furniture, kitchen articles and even electrical wires, causing a great danger to your home. Rats are omnivores and eat almost everything. Rats prefer living in farms, fields and wooded areas. In a home, they will make their habitat in any foundation opening or create a hole themselves. Outdoors, their sharp teeth destroy crops. For killing rats, poison should be avoided as it might be harmful to the pets and small children, just like in mouse extermination. When you use poison, the fleas, ticks and mites residing in its body search for a new abode, is very dangerous.

rat extermination

Rat extermination method include both catching them alive as well as killing them. Snap traps and glue traps are the most predominant means of killing rats. Identify places that you suspect rats frequent the most and then place the traps there. Using rat poison increases the risk to humans and pets in the house. If you think that you don’t have enough time to tackle the problem yourself, then you can always take the help of pest control professionals. They employ their expertise to place the traps and use more effective baits to lure rats that you may not be able to get yourself.

Along with the various available rat extermination methods stated above, you need to make certain changes to your living conditions and habits as well. Start with cleaning your house. Rats like to live near a place where there is no scarcity of food. The various food sources in your house are an ideal attraction. Make sure that you don’t keep any eatable article in a chewable container. Those should be replaced by either tin or hard plastic. Keep your kitchen clean. You won’t notice rats during the day but at night, your kitchen serves as their dining place. Keep the basins of your home dry to devoid them of water. The garbage cans should be properly sealed even when kept outside the house. Minimize places where the rats may hide and seal every opening or vent that you suspect the rat might use to enter or exit your house. A female rat gives birth to 8-12 pups at a single time and does it 10-12 times a year. Imagine their exponential rise if the rat extermination is not tackled at an early stage.

Rat Traps

March 7th, 2012

Rats are the most hated rodents on Earth and for this very reason, a number of rat traps are available in the market. People don’t hate rats because they live in sewers and other dirty places but because they are a carrier of deadly diseases and cause a great loss to crops. Research shows that total annual crop loss due to rat infestation would be enough to feed 200 million people. Indoors, rats chew away valuable property and wires which is a leading cause of fire in houses. Considering the amount of losses rats are responsible for, effective rat traps are the need of the hour.

rat traps

With the advent in technology, rat traps have also become sophisticated. The electronic rat trap is the most popular trap for rat extermination for indoor use. Bait is placed inside this trap and infrared sensors are fitted on the way to detect the arrival of the rat. When the rat smells the bait and finally arrives in the chamber, it is electrocuted with high voltage electricity. This electricity comes from a number of AA batteries which are installed in the machine. The rat is instantly killed and falls in the chamber below. It can be used for up to 10 rats at a time. These machines are so advanced that they even have lights to indicate when you have caught a rat. This machine is considered more humane than the rest of the rat traps as it causes an immediate death of the rat without much pain and suffering. Their price ranges from $50 to $200. The most prominent companies manufacturing these types of traps are Rat Zapper and Victor.

Another trap is rat cage trap. Its functioning is simple. The bait lures the rat into the trap and when it plucks at the bait, the spring mechanism shuts the door of the trap. This trap is widely used outdoors because of its simplicity and cost effectiveness. The rat cage trap is designed to capture the rat, not kill it. The snap trap and the glue trap kill the rat instantly. Any type of rat trap is much better than rat poison. Rat poison, if used indoors, may prove harmful for humans and animals and when used outdoors, may damage the crops and other trees.

A lot of rat traps are available in the market and a rat trap should be selected and bought in accordance with the requirements and keeping its cost in mind.

Rat Extermination

February 12th, 2012

Rat extermination, just like mouse extermination, requires some knowledge about rats. Rats are bigger in size than mice and usually six to ten inches long. Rats eat almost everything; they are known to eat meat too. Rats prefer living outdoors in wooded areas and in farms where there is abundant to eat but they can live inside a building too in a vacant basement or any hole in the wall. If they reside indoors, they can cause you a variety of problems ranging from chewing away your furniture, kitchen articles like cardboard boxes and electrical wires, which is one of the leading causes of fires in houses. Outdoors, they destroy and chew away crops and plants. For rat extermination, avoid using rat poison as it might be harmful to your pets and infants. Besides, if you kill a rat by using poison, the different fleas and ticks previously residing in its body search for a new place, and can be devastating.

More and more people exercise humane ways to catch rats to avoid injury or death but the classical snap and glue traps are still used by the majority. Before placing a trap, identify the areas where the rats are seen the most. These areas would most likely be your kitchen or near the walls. Using rat poison poses a risk to pets and infants in the house. You can also try sealing off the entry and exit points to curb their movement. Humane Rat Traps

January 26th, 2012

If you have a rat problem in your house or garage, it can be a big problem, so it is important that you find human rat traps to solve that problem. Rats are much bigger and smarter than mice, as well as significantly more destructive, so it’s very important to get a good trap that will either kill the rat instantly and therefore humanely, or will trap the rat in such a way that it cannot escape until you plan on releasing it far from your house.

rat traps

The most humane of rat traps catches the rat and holds it there for you to release. You can find these at most hardware stores. The best kind is a wire cage that has a trigger on the bottom at the back. When the trigger is tripped, the door on the opposite end closes and latches shut. It is important with these to place the bait all the way to the back of the trap, and that you have it set up correctly. If it doesn’t latch and the rat escapes the first time, the rat will not be likely to trust the trap again.

Another type of trap that is also humane is a snap trap, or bar snap trap. They are a bit cheaper and do kill the rat, but it can be messy and is not always 100%. These should be used very cautiously if you have pets or young children, as it can easily break paws or fingers. They will also need to be set and baited properly so that you have success on the first try. Rats learn very quickly what food is safe and what food is not safe. With these, it is also important to remove the dead rat as soon as possible if you have other rats that you are trying to catch, as the other rats might associate the trap with death and avoid it.

When baiting traps, be sure to carefully follow the instructions that come with each trap. Rats are not picky, but you should still be sure you bait your traps with something very appealing to them. Anything sweet is great, especially if it has a strong scent, and you have to be sure it is attached securely to the triggering mechanism. The rat traps should then be placed in a dark place along a wall, where rats are most likely to be, and will feel safe enough to stop and eat.

Only Rat Traps Will Solve This Problem

January 8th, 2012

Rats traps differ from mouse traps in significant ways.  These animals may have similar features but the difference in their sizes, habits, and mental capacities require slightly different pest control strategies.

rat traps

Perhaps the most daunting feature of the rat is its stocky build.  Species common to the United States are approximately twice the size of house mice.  These enlarged proportions can cause problems with some traps, such as glue mats.  The adhesive coating is strong enough to catch mice but rats are more likely to pull themselves to freedom.  Not only would this result in an unrestrained rodent, it may also cause sticky little footprints that will require extensive scrubbing to remove from floors.

Once a rat has freed itself from a glue mat, it is highly unlikely to revisit the trap.  Rats are smart animals that are even capable of learning tricks when domesticated.  They would know to avoid glue mats in the future.  Their inherent cautiousness of unfamiliar objects makes them difficult to catch by any means.  To increase their curiosity of baited traps, remove all other available food sources like garbage cans, dinner scraps, and pantry items.  Without those options, they will be forced to take bait as a last resort.

Rats’ wariness will also make them hesitate to nibble on poison.  Exterminators caution against the use of this method for good reasons.  Not only is it a danger to pets and children, it’s also difficult to implement.  Rats may not identify poison as an edible item.  Even if they do, they may not eat enough to feel any ill effects.  Successfully poisoned rats will retreat back to inaccessible hiding places like behind walls or high in the attic.  Their decaying remains will create a horrific smell.

Skip the glue traps and poison in favor of a tried and true method that has been used for over 100 years.  The first snap-trap was patented by an Illisnois-based man named William C. Hooker in 1894.  In that time, the design has changed very little, showing that in all its simplicity, it is still one of the most effectual methods of pest control.  Most people are already familiar with mouse snap-traps and may even have some in storage.  Don’t be tempted to reuse them for rat control.  Rat snap-traps are twice the size of the ones intended for mice and in this case, size matters.  The smaller variety will only serve to hurt a rat, not to kill it, allowing it to escape.  Injured rats, like poisoned ones, may expire in unreachable parts of the house or even heal enough to continue causing trouble.  Opting for the correctly sized rat traps will eliminate this problem and in the long run, an entire infestation.

Read labels carefully to ensure you are purchasing rat traps instead of a trap intended for another type of animal.

Myths And Facts About Rats

January 4th, 2012

It can be difficult to discern the myths from the facts about rats.  Pop culture doesn’t help.  Rats have been built up as super-animals, capable of eating metal and destroying small villages.  It’s true that these critters can be a serious nuisance but they are far from being certified monsters.  The myths that surround them make them seem scarier than they really are.

facts about rats

To start, rats cannot eat metal.  They have a very diverse diet but it is limited to standard consumable items.  It’s possible that this falsehood grew out of their verifiable habit of chewing on inedible materials like concrete and wood.  Rats do not consume these substances though.  They simply nibble on barriers to break through them, a habit that can create a great deal of structural damage to a building.  Instead, rats have an omnivorous diet and have adapted to eat anything that a human would normally eat.

Our garbage and messy tendencies encourage rats to hang around human settlements.  Their nocturnal schedule means that they are rarely seen and when they are, it is in dimly lit surroundings.  Perhaps it’s the poor lighting that causes people to exaggerate the purported size of rats.  Urban legends abound concerning sewer rats the size of alley cats.  In reality, rats max out around 1 lb (0.45 kg).  In North America, there are two common varieties around this size: the roof rat and the Norway rat.  The Norway rat is the larger of the two species.  It has a stocky, gray-brown body with small ears and a tail that is shorter than its body.  Roof rats have smaller, black bodies.  Neither species grows to the size of a cat.

Despite their stature, rats are still capable of carrying an abundant variety of diseases like leptospirosis, hantavirus, and typhus along with parasites such as ticks and fleas.  But one disease that they are frequently credited with carrying is not among their repertoire.  Rabies cases among rats are extremely rare.  In fact, there has never been a recorded case of a rat transmitting rabies to a human within the United States.

Simply put, rats are nothing but rodents.  Granted, they are among the larger variety one is likely to find inside a human dwelling, but they are not the enormous, rabid animals that legend has made them out to be.  The real facts about rats prove them to be nuisances that bring risks of disease and structural damage, but still just animals.

Rat Extermination Is No Joke

December 31st, 2011

Rat extermination must be carried out swiftly and efficiently to contain the threats posed by these pests.  These animals are much harder to catch than mice.  They are intelligent and wary creatures that often avoid traps and poisons.  Amateur attempts to dispatch them often take an extended amount of time.  In that period, rats can continue to do structural damage, spread disease, and reproduce at an alarming rate.

rat extermination

Rats are tenacious creatures that will do what it takes to get where they want to go.  Their teeth are stronger and larger than those of mice, which allows them to tackle harder materials.  They can cause damage inside the home by gnawing through wooden beams or even concrete.  There have been reports of rats igniting house fires by chewing on electrical wires, posing an obvious hazard to humans.  Even if they don’t cause permanent structural damage, rats may cause unsightly injury to dwellings.  Their access holes can pop up in a variety of locations, like inside cabinets and through hardwood floorboards.  Their greasy fur also tends to leave dirty streaks along walls that are difficult to clean.

Rats’ filthiness is more than just skin deep.  Their fur brings parasites like ticks and fleas.  Rats also transmit serious diseases that can prove fatal to humans.  During the Middle Ages, rats were partly responsible for the epidemic proportions of the bubonic plague, which their fleas carried.  Thankfully, the plague is no longer a common occurrence in most parts of the world.  Instead, rats are likely to carry diseases such as
hantavirus, lymphocytic choriomeningitis, and leptospirosis.  These ailments are transmitted in rat urine, which is liberally sprinkled along their foraging paths and can even contaminate human food supplies.

Both structural damage and disease contamination will occur faster with a larger population of rats.  Even a few rats can be the start of a major pest problem due to their lightening fast reproduction cycles.  The common Norway rat, known more familiarly as the sewer rat, can be found in almost all of the United States.  This species can breed year round in a protected indoor environment.  A female is able to have 4 to 7 litters per year each containing 12 to 14 young.  Even a single female rat can multiply into nearly 100 vermin within a year.

Rats’ ability to swiftly reproduce in staggering numbers can cause a population boom in mere months.  Each individual rat is another opportunity to introduce grave illnesses into a home as well as put the structural integrity of a house at risk.  Identify infestations quickly and pursue the fastest, most comprehensive rat extermination options available.
